Cupcake ice cream cones

Posted in Entertaining

How are these for adorable?

My son’s school recently had a bake sale and his class was responsible for bringing cupcakes. I wanted to make something a little different. I know I shouldn’t be competitive (I hate those moms) but I wanted my son to be proud of our contribution.

These cupcake ice cream cones were perfect. A little bit pretty, to attract the girls. A little bit cool, to attract the boys. And showed a little effort, to please the teachers.

Bonus: They were easy!

  1. Mix your favourite cake batter. I used a cake mix.
  2. Fill each flat-bottomed ice cream cone about 2/3 of the way full.
  3. Place each ice cream cone on a baking sheet or muffin tray.
  4. Bake about 15 minutes or until cooked when tested with a tooth pick.
  5. Cool the cones.
  6. Spread white icing on the tops and decorate with sprinkles or other fun toppings.

My son reported that the kids and teachers thought these cupcakes were “epic” so I’m going to call it a success.

Things I learned from Kim Kardashian

Posted in Beauty, Body, Fashion

I’m an educated woman. I didn’t think I had much to learn from Kim Kardashian. But when it comes to style and working with what you’ve got, it’s hard to imagine a better teacher than Kim K.

Her dimensions might pose enormous problems for the lesser among us, but Kim is making being short and curvy incredibly sexy.

You don’t have to be stick-thin

After seeing a million too many photos of bony models, a few curves and softness is a welcome change. Even Jennifer Lopez, who is often heralded as a curvy woman, has abs of steel and well-toned legs. Many photos of Kim show a healthy woman with a flat but soft set of abdominals. She’s thin but not stick-thin. I (and millions of men) think she looks great.

You don’t have to be tall to be larger than life

Estimates for Kim’s height hover around 5 feet 2 inches and 5 feet 3 inches. Either way, she’s not tall. She may not even be “average” height. But her glamour and fashion and confidence make her appear larger than life. Her stilettos probably don’t hurt either. (Well, they may hurt physically.)

Pick a feature to flatter

Kim has beautiful eyes which becomes especially evident when you see a photo of her without makeup. Kim is prone to featuring her eyes with dark makeup and lashes, while painting her lips a fairly nude hue. When you see a woman with dark hair, dramatic eyes and plump, fleshy lips, your mind might automatically jump to Kim. In fact, the look-alike Old Navy hired for a recent ad campaign had people buzzing because she shared these same characteristics.

Work with what you’ve got

Aside from money, Kim’s got curves. And more curves. And she’s smart enough to work them. No flouncy loose tops. No baggy pants. No shapeless dresses. She wears fitted clothes with structure to emphasize her small waist. If her clothes weren’t fitted, she would look boxy. And while this might not work for everyone every day, she isn’t afraid of showing her ample cleavage. She knows what her strengths are and she works ‘em.

Exfoliation. Who knew!?

Posted in Beauty, Liza's journey

Whenever I read magazine articles about skin care, exfoliation always appears as a key strategy for clear skin.

I always thought I was exfoliating just fine. I used a face cloth and soap. I rubbed a little toner on my skin.

It turns out that isn’t enough. Not for my skin, anyway.

I recently had a facial and the esthetician help talking about my dry skin. I’ve always had oily skin, I told her. She explained that my skin was making extra oil because it was so dry on top. Clearly she was inexperienced. Damn my penchant for great deals and Groupons for leading me to this place.

But when I left the day spa, my skin feeling fresh and open, I decided to give her advice a little more credit.

At home, I dug out the many tubes of Clinique’s 7 Day Scrub I have accumulated in my various Clinique Bonus Time packages.

The next day, I began scrubbing my face just a little more deeply. I used the 7 Day Scrub as directed. I used a little extra moisturizer.

Darn it. She was right.

My skin has never looked this good.

My previously bumpy and red cheeks are smooth. The trouble area along my jawline is clearer. My make up applies more smoothly. My skin just feels more open and clean.

If your skin is less than radiant and smooth, I’d recommend trying a little more exfoliation and moisturizing.

Keeping your fabulous clothes lint-free

Posted in Fashion

We recently adopted a dog. He has been fantastic for my weight-loss plan! He enjoys long walks and is great on a leash so I really enjoy taking him out.

While he’s not a heavy shedder – in fact he’s a very light shedder – I do find the odd hair around the house and on my clothes. He also seems to attract every piece of lint floating around the house so when we walks by me, my pant legs get a fine film of lint.

Do you suffer from the same problem? Here are some easy tips for keeping your fabulous clothes lint-free.

Invest in lint rollers and clothes brushes

Yes, it’s obvious, but buy lint rollers. Notice I used the plural here. Buy rollers and brushes that you can have handy around your house, office, car, purse…everywhere. It might cost a bit up-front, but you’ll find you’ve always got one when you need one. They even make tiny rollers perfect for your purse, gym bag or glove compartment.

Use the fluff cycle

You can throw your clothes into the dryer on the fluff or air cycle. Sometimes that’s all that’s needed to loosen the lint or hairs from your clothes.

Try a damp cloth

If you’re concerned about using a sticky lint roller on your delicate or adorned clothes, try using a damp cloth. Just lightly run it over your clothes to pick up the lint gently.

Take it for dry cleaning

I once had a pair of pants that my cat decided to use as a bed. Her fur was stuck in the fibres and no amount of lint rolling was going to get it all out. I took them in for dry cleaning and they came back perfect. If you have a piece of clothing that is hard to clean, take it for a good cleaning.

Use a static remover

Use a static spray on your most lint-attracting clothes. You’ll find that you collect less lint – and what you do collect will be easier to remove.
